Selenia E. and Joseph C. Valley , Sr. Memorial Trust Fund for Gerontological Nursing

 

The fund provides for the Selenia E. & Joseph C. Valley Annual Conference at which two awards are given, the Gerontological Professional of the Year Award and the Community Advocate Award. Since its inception, recipients awarded this honor are:

Criteria for the J.C. Valley Professional of the Year and the J.C. Valley Community Service Award.

 

Professional of the Year :

A gerontology/geriatric nursing professional, practicing gerontological nursing in long-term care settings and having a sustained impact on the lives of older adults as evidenced by one or more of the following:

(a) publications (peer reviewed research, newsletters, books and/or popular publications)

(b) clinical service

(c) pro bono/community service work

(d) mentorship of other professionals involved in long-term care

(e) training and in-service education.

 

Community Advocate Award:

An individual involved in his or her community having an ongoing impact on the lives of older adults as evidenced by one or more of the following:

(a) being an advocate for persons in long-term care

(b) volunteer work and/or community service work, for example, volunteering in nursing homes, ombudsmen programs, delivering meals to community-based elderly, participating in education to the elderly, participating in outreach ministries, and any volunteer activities having to do with older adults.

 

The nomination procedure for both awards will be the same.

 

Solicitation of Nominations: The Center on Aging will publish the award criteria in the Center on Aging newsletter (April issue) and other appropriate publications or journals. Nominations will be solicited from the J.C. Valley Board and local organizations.

 

Nomination Procedure: A nominee should submit a CV or resume and a letter of application that addresses the criteria above.

 

Deadline: Nominations should be addressed to Dr. Nancy Bergstrom, Director, Center on Aging, UTSON-H Center on Aging, 6901 Bertner Avenue , Houston , TX 77030 or to Nancy.Bergstrom@uth.tmc.edu. They should be received by June 1. The Valley Advisory Board will make the decision by June 15.
