We are happy to announce that the DVD that we produced in Houston, “Stroke: Conversations and Explanations” has finally arrived and is available for purchase. The DVD will be available to conference participants at a discount on April 12th. Dr. Joan Wasserman, a faculty member involved for several years with the CAReS research study has received a grant from the Rehabilitation Nurses Foundation to study the quality of life of stroke survivors and spouses who participated earlier in the CAReS study. This will allow us to get a better understanding of the long-term impact of stroke on families. We continue to disseminate information about the CAReS research study. We will be presenting five posters atthe International Stroke Conference in February in New Orleans. The titles of the posters are: Predictors of Resuming Therapy within Four Weeks after Discharge from Inpatient Rehabilitation, Changes in Health-Related Quality of Life for Long-Term Stroke Survivors as Measured by the Stroke Impact Scale, Expressions of Spirituality in Caregivers of Stroke Survivors, Impact of Inpatient Rehabilitation Complications on Stroke Survivor Recovery, and Outpatient Rehabilitative Service Cost the First Year Post Stroke. As always, if you would like to read the abstracts for the presentations, you can go to our website and read more about them http://son.uth.tmc.edu/ coa/cares_pres-poster.htm or give me a call at 713/500-9940. All of us at the Center on Aging wish you all a VERY HAPPY AND HEALTHY NEW YEAR.

The small group sessions are informal and include demonstrations and opportunities for questions. All faculty presenting the small group sessions are experts in their areas of expertise.
We are very fortunate to have a stroke survivor and his wife, Jamie and Kathleen Garza, with us to present a personal account of their experience learning to live with a stroke, by focusing on the remaining strengths and finding ways to adapt to their new life. This presentation will occur during the lunch and there will be time for questions. Jamie received the Brain Injury Survivor of the Year awarded in April 2007 from the Brain Injury Association of Texas.
The conference will end with a unique presentation that you will never forget. Dr. Lynda Cleveland, on the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin, is a survivor of a tragic car accident that caused multiple injuries and a severe traumatic brain injury. She has used this experience to become an advocate for individuals who have experienced brain injuries. She has a very unique way of presenting her message, using Clebo, the clown as a part of her presentation. It is entitled Can You Send a Duck to Eagle School?
